It is the nature of prose that it is linear. There’s a beginning, a middle and a end. That has been a fact of life for storytellers since the beginning of time, and the rules of drama have been around since the ancient Greeks, and are still taught in scriptwriting courses. As many innovations writers have played with, mixing up time and space, it’s always been page two following page one, everything in a particular order. Even a crazy-backwards story like Memento was crafted with a particular order in mind.
That’s started to change with the advent of the computer. Well not change, there will always be the old fashioned type of storytelling around, but there is a new type of storytelling emerging. It emerged first within video games, and the stories within the games have grown more and more complex and immersive . But with the internet, we’ve begun to see the prose equivalent, a universe you can enter at any point and follow around in any direction. I present you with the SCP Foundation, a huge multi-author wiki that is very addictive, creepy and funny.
