My wife’s birthday came in November, and today this gift box was delivered:

That’s a mighty impressive box. Wonder what’s inside?

Ok, packed snugly with some paper packing materials, another box. Interesting. Want to take a wild guess what’s inside? Well there were a whole mess of Styrofoam peanuts and…

Another box!

Fortunately, that’s where it ends, because in the smallest of the boxes contained the actual gift, all safe and snug, encased in bubble-wrap.

Actually a pretty nice set of ramekins. Very cute, my wife loves them. But to give you an idea of the enormity of the packaging Wal-Mart shipped these in, here’s a comparison. My wife’s gift, and the package it came in.

You know, I may be out on a limb here, but this seems a little excessive. You think the VP of on-line marketing at Wal-Mart is wondering why their shipping and handling costs are so high?

YEah but they got such a great deal on those large boxes and now they have whole warehouses full of them.

Awesome. I saw a couple of packaging disasters at The Register. I also have a documented case on my blog of a baby blanket that I got complete with plastic padding: http://www.machine501.com/blog/2008/06/04/unbelievable-packaging-waste-from-babies-r-us/

I contacted Toys-r-Us corporate to let them know but received no response.
